Determining the type of player that we are targeting is essential to designing a good Gamification strategy, as its success depends in great part on choosing the most adequate game mechanics to motivate and involve our model user.
TYPES OF PLAYERS
According to Richard Bartle, there are four types of players:
- Killer / Ambitious: their main goal is to beat their rivals. Therefore, rankings and levels are the most adequate game mechanics to keep the player active and participating.
- Achiever / Conqueror: their motivation is to overcome all the challenges that appear before them. The most effective way to get their attention is by way of achievement-oriented games.
- Socializer / Sociable: their game philosophy is “sharing is living.” Their main source of enjoyment is meeting new people and making new friends, so nothing is more effective than offering them chats, feeds, news or contact lists.
- Explorer / Adventurer: They love adventure and discovering new things. Offer them complex tasks and you´ll peak their interest.
